Houghton-le-Spring
An old pit town with a lot of green to keep
Houghton-le-Spring was a colliery town for more than 150 years. The pit sank its first shaft in 1823 and closed in 1981. The colliery is gone now, but the town it built still has plenty of grass, hedges and open ground that somebody has to keep.
It is a town that looks after its history. Rectory Park was the garden of the Old Rectory until it opened to the public in the 1940s, and the Hillside Cemetery beside the Houghton Cut began life as a quarry before it was consecrated in 1854. Houghton Feast still runs for ten days every October, and it goes back to the 12th century.
Houghton is in the City of Sunderland rather than County Durham, so public land here is Sunderland City Council's. We work for everyone else with grounds to keep, from Sacriston, about six and a half miles west of the town.
