A planned town needs planned grounds
Washington was designated a new town in 1964 and laid out on purpose: 18 residential villages such as Albany, Oxclose, Concord and Sulgrave, with ten industrial estates alongside them. A town planned that way has a lot of green space built into it: grass between the villages, verges along the roads and boundary hedges round the estates.
That is where a written schedule earns its keep. Instead of a standard round, the frequency is set to each part of the site: the frontage people see from the road, the back verge nobody walks on, the hedge that blocks a sightline at the car park exit.
Washington sits in the City of Sunderland, so it is Sunderland City Council's patch rather than County Durham's. The town has no town council of its own. Our base is in Sacriston, about 7 miles to the south west.
