What a year on your site actually looks like

Most contractors say the schedule depends on the site and leave it there. Here is the shape of it, so you can see what you are paying for month by month, and so the next committee meeting has an answer.

March to May

Growth starts, and everything is about keeping up

The site goes from dormant to fastest-growing in about six weeks. Get the first cuts and the edges right now and the whole year looks maintained.

    First cuts, then rising frequency. Fortnightly from the first cut, moving toward weekly as growth accelerates into May.

    Edges reinstated. Paths, beds, memorials and furniture edged back after the winter.

    Feeding and aeration. Where the sward is thin or compacted from winter footfall.
  • check
    No hedge cutting.Nesting season. Active nests are protected by law from March. Hedge work stops until autumn unless a site inspection clears it.
  • check
    Spring bulbs left to die back. Cutting them early is what stops them coming back next year.

June to August

Peak season, and the months you get judged on

This is when the site is busiest and most visible. Consistency matters more than anything else here.

    Cuts every seven to ten days. Tightened in a wet summer rather than left to catch up later.

    Strimming around the obstacles. Posts, benches, play equipment, memorials and fence lines, every visit.

    Wildflower meadows left standing. They are supposed to look untidy in July. Cutting them now defeats the point of having them.
  • check
    Litter and fly-tipping checked each visit. Reported with photographs before it becomes a bigger job.

    Shrub beds kept off the paths. Light trimming for sightlines, saving structural pruning for winter.

September to November

The safety season

Growth slows and the risk changes. Leaf fall on a walkway is the most common slip hazard on a maintained site, and it arrives on a schedule you can plan for.

    Leaf clearance, prioritised by risk.Safety critical. Entrances, walkways, steps and car parks first. Open grass last.

    Hedge cutting resumes. Once the nesting season has ended, boundary hedges and shrub beds are cut back properly.

    Meadow cut and collect. Arisings lifted rather than left, so the soil stays low in nutrients and the flowers come back.

    Final cuts, lifting the height. Grass left slightly longer going into winter to protect the crown.

    Bulbs planted for spring. What the site looks like in March is decided in October.

December to February

The quiet months are when next year gets built

Cutting stops, so this is when the structural work happens, the work that is impossible once everything is in leaf.

    Border renovation. Overgrown beds lifted, split, replanted or cleared.

Reggie has 15 years in the trade and set the company up in 2024. He still runs every contract himself. He quotes the work, he plans the schedule, and he is on site while it is being done. There is no account manager in between.

That is the whole reason the business exists in the shape it does. A larger contractor sells you one standard, prices it against another, and sends a crew who have never seen your site. Reggie does not have that problem, because there is nobody to hand it off to.

How often would you visit?expand_more
It changes through the year rather than staying fixed. Fortnightly from the first cut in spring, moving to every seven to ten days through peak growth in June and July, then easing off into autumn. The schedule is agreed and written down before the first visit.
When can hedges be cut?expand_more
Autumn and winter, once the bird nesting season has finished. Active nests are protected by law and the nesting season runs from roughly March to August, so hedge work is planned around it rather than squeezed in. If something has to be cut inside that window for a genuine safety reason, the hedge is checked for nests first.
What hours do you work?expand_more
On site from 7am to 5pm. Grounds work is weather-led, so if a visit has to move it moves within the week rather than being dropped, and you are told before it happens rather than after.

It is taken off site and disposed of responsibly rather than piled at the boundary. Wildflower meadow arisings are cut and collected rather than left, because leaving them enriches the soil and the flowers stop coming back.

Yes, and it is the core of the business: highway verges, recreation grounds and ornamental lawns, plus care homes, schools, industrial estates and cemeteries. Domestic work is taken on as well.
