Durham City

Grounds in a city people come to look at

Durham is built on a bend in the River Wear. The river loops round the peninsula on three sides, and a lot of what visitors see on the way in is grass, trees and banks rather than buildings. Grounds here are judged by people who came specifically to look.

The city also has more old green space than most places its size. Wharton Park has been a formal park since 1857 and reopened in 2016 after a £3 million restoration. Flass Vale is historic woodland in the green belt, part of it a local nature reserve. That sets the bar for everything around it, from a block's communal lawn to an office frontage.

Reggie T Landscapes is run by its owner, Reggie Tribuisis, from Unit 4 Plawsworth Road in Sacriston. He prices the work, writes the schedule and is on site while it is done.

Who we work for in Durham

The people who answer for Durham's grounds

A city with a new parish council, a lot of managed housing and plenty of commercial frontage has several kinds of buyer. Each wants something slightly different.

account_balance Councils and public bodies Durham County Council is the unitary authority, and the City of Durham Parish Council has existed only since April 2018. Verges, greens and open space, on a written schedule a clerk or officer can check against.
apartment Managing agents and residential blocks Communal lawns, boundary hedges and shrub beds around blocks and estates, kept to the frequency the service charge pays for and no less.
school Schools, care homes and offices Sites where the grounds are part of the first impression, and where work has to fit around the people using them. Frontages, car park edges and planted borders.
home Homeowners Lawns, hedges, full garden tidy ups and landscaping for houses in the city. Commercial work is most of the business, but domestic work is taken on too.

FAQs

Questions about Durham sites

Anything else, ask Reggie on the phone.

How far are you from Durham?expand_more
Our base is Unit 4 Plawsworth Road in Sacriston, about three and a half miles north west of the city centre in a straight line. The city and the villages around it are the core of the area we cover.
Can you work on grounds near the river or in the conservation area?expand_more
Yes. Riverside banks, mature trees and old walls change how a site is cut and what kit goes where, and the schedule is written with that in mind before the first visit.
How often would you visit?expand_more
It changes through the year rather than staying fixed. Fortnightly from the first cut in spring, moving to every seven to ten days through peak growth in June and July, then easing off into autumn. The schedule is agreed and written down before the first visit.
When can hedges be cut?expand_more
Autumn and winter, once the bird nesting season has finished. Active nests are protected by law and the nesting season runs from roughly March to August, so hedge work is planned around it rather than squeezed in. If something has to be cut inside that window for a genuine safety reason, the hedge is checked for nests first.
What documents can you provide before we commit?expand_more
Insurance details, risk assessments, method statements and references, all on request. Company details are public: Reggie T Landscapes Limited, registered in England and Wales, number 15496162, registered office Unit 4 Plawsworth Road, Sacriston, Durham DH7 6JX.
