Sunderland

A city of parks, and the grounds in between

Sunderland became a city in 1992, and it is a city with a lot of green in it. Mowbray Park, Roker Park and Barnes Park are historic, and Herrington Country Park opened opposite Penshaw Monument in the early 2000s. Those are Sunderland City Council's to run.

The rest of the grass in the city belongs to someone else: the lawns round a housing estate, the frontage of an office on a business park, the grounds of a care home or a school. That is our side of the work. One owner, one written schedule, and the frequency set to the site rather than to a standard round.

The Wear cuts the city in two through a deep valley, and we cover both banks, north and south. Our base is in Sacriston, about 11 miles south west of the centre.

Who we work for in Sunderland

From business parks to back gardens

A city this size has every kind of grounds client. These are the four we are built around.

business Business parks and offices Sunderland has business parks such as Doxford International. Lawns, hedge lines and borders at office and commercial sites, kept so a visitor's first impression is a good one.
apartment Housing estates and managing agents Communal lawns, paths and shrub beds on residential estates and around blocks, cut to the frequency the service charge covers, with every visit on the written schedule.
elderly Care homes and schools Grounds that have to stay safe and pleasant while people use them every day. Work is timed around residents and pupils, and hedges are cut outside the nesting season.
home Homeowners Regular grass cutting, hedge trimming, garden tidy ups and turfing for houses across the city. Most of the business is commercial, and domestic work is taken on too.

FAQs

Sunderland questions

Something else on your mind? Give Reggie a ring.

Do you cover both sides of the river?expand_more
Yes. North and south of the Wear, from the seafront inland, plus Washington and Houghton-le-Spring, which are also in the City of Sunderland.
Do you look after the public parks?expand_more
No. Parks like Mowbray Park and Barnes Park are run by Sunderland City Council. We work for the people who own the rest: businesses, managing agents, care homes, schools and homeowners.
Is Sunderland too far from Sacriston for a regular contract?expand_more
No. It is about 11 miles, and Sunderland is one of the areas we cover. The schedule is agreed in writing before the first visit, so you know when to expect us.
How often would you visit?expand_more
It changes through the year rather than staying fixed. Fortnightly from the first cut in spring, moving to every seven to ten days through peak growth in June and July, then easing off into autumn. The schedule is agreed and written down before the first visit.
What happens to the green waste?expand_more
It is taken off site and disposed of responsibly rather than piled at the boundary. Wildflower meadow arisings are cut and collected rather than left, because leaving them enriches the soil and the flowers stop coming back.
