Lanchester

A village that plans for its green spaces

Lanchester is built around its green. The village green sits at the heart of it, with mature trees and the Grade 1 listed parish church looking over it, and the old core of the village is a conservation area. The church was built partly from the stone of Longovicium, the Roman fort at Lanchester, and still has a Roman altar in its porch.

The village cares about keeping it that way. The parish has its own neighbourhood plan, adopted by Durham County Council and running to 2034, and one of its policies is about protecting the green spaces and the countryside around the village. Grounds work here should fit that: neat, not harsh, and in keeping with stone walls and old trees.

We are based in Sacriston, about 5 miles to the east, so Lanchester is close to home.

Who we work for in Lanchester

Homes first, then the village's shared ground

Lanchester is a village, not a business park, so most of the work here is gardens. Community and church grounds are covered too.

cottage Homeowners Grass cutting, hedges, garden tidy ups, turfing, fencing and patios for houses in the village and the farms and hamlets around it.
account_balance Parish and community grounds Greens, verges and shared open space, on a written schedule that a parish clerk or a committee can read, agree and file.
nature Churchyards and burial grounds Grass and hedges kept tidy with care around graves and memorials, on a frequency that suits the ground and the season.
school Schools and care homes Grounds that people use all day, with the work planned around them and hedges cut outside the bird nesting season.

FAQs

Lanchester questions

Anything not answered here, ring Reggie.

Do you take on ordinary gardens in Lanchester, or only big contracts?expand_more
Ordinary gardens are welcome. Most of the business is commercial, but domestic work is taken on too, from a regular grass cut to a full tidy of front and back.
The burn runs past our garden and the ground stays wet. Can you help?expand_more
Smallhope Burn and Alderdene Burn both run through the village, and low ground near them can hold water. Swale and drainage inspection is part of our seasonal work, so we can check the channels on your land and tell you plainly what we find.
When can hedges be cut?expand_more
Autumn and winter, once the bird nesting season has finished. Active nests are protected by law and the nesting season runs from roughly March to August, so hedge work is planned around it rather than squeezed in. If something has to be cut inside that window for a genuine safety reason, the hedge is checked for nests first.
What happens to the green waste?expand_more
It is taken off site and disposed of responsibly rather than piled at the boundary. Wildflower meadow arisings are cut and collected rather than left, because leaving them enriches the soil and the flowers stop coming back.
