Brandon, County Durham
A big parish with a lot of grass to keep
Brandon grew fast once the pits came. Mining took off in the 1850s, Brandon Colliery was sunk in 1856, and the population of the area went from 522 in 1801 to over fourteen thousand by 1891. The pit closed in 1968, but the village it built is still a sizeable place.
It sits in Brandon and Byshottles parish, which has more than fourteen thousand people on its electoral roll across eight communities. The parish council's own list of what it provides includes 517 allotments, plus parks, a play area, grass cutting, seating and bins. That is a lot of ground that needs cutting on time, every time.
Open ground is never far away. The River Browney runs past the village, and the Brandon to Bishop Auckland Railway Path sets off from Broompark on the old line south. Reggie Tribuisis owns the company, writes every schedule and does the work himself.
