Stanhope, upper Weardale

The biggest parish in England

Stanhope parish covers about 85 square miles of the dale, more ground than any other parish in England, and most of it is moorland in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town itself sits down on the River Wear, and the parish council keeps a lot of green space in use: a cemetery, five play areas, well over a hundred allotments, seating and footpaths.

That is the honest shape of grounds work up here. Less business park frontage, more of the ground a community uses: a churchyard with a fossil tree standing in it, play areas, the lawns round holiday cottages, a big house garden on the hillside. Grass on this kind of ground often wants a meadow cut and collect rather than a weekly mow, and that is a service we already offer.

Our base in Sacriston is about 16 miles east of Stanhope in a straight line. That makes it one of the furthest places on our list. It is still one of the areas we cover, so ring and talk the job through.

Who looks after the grass up the dale

A small town with a big parish. These are the people most likely to need a grounds contractor.

park Churches and burial grounds Grass between headstones, paths kept clear and boundary hedges cut outside the nesting season, with green waste taken off site.
cottage Holiday lets and guest houses Visitors come to Stanhope for the dale, the Dales Centre and the open air pool. The lawn is the first thing a guest sees, so the cut can be planned around your changeover days.

FAQs

Asked about Stanhope

Anything else, ring and ask.

Stanhope is a long way from Sacriston. Will you still come?expand_more
Yes, Stanhope is one of the areas we cover. It is about 16 miles in a straight line. Ring and talk the job through before anything is booked.
Do you cover the rest of Stanhope parish?expand_more
The parish runs a long way up the dale. Tell us where the site is when you ring and we will tell you straight whether we can take it on.
Can you cut a wildflower meadow or rough grass?expand_more
Yes. Meadow areas are cut and the arisings collected rather than left, which keeps the flowers coming back. Swale and drainage inspection is part of the same seasonal work.
When can hedges be cut?expand_more
Autumn and winter, once the bird nesting season has finished. Active nests are protected by law and the nesting season runs from roughly March to August, so hedge work is planned around it rather than squeezed in. If something has to be cut inside that window for a genuine safety reason, the hedge is checked for nests first.
What happens to the green waste?expand_more
It is taken off site and disposed of responsibly rather than piled at the boundary. Wildflower meadow arisings are cut and collected rather than left, because leaving them enriches the soil and the flowers stop coming back.
