Crook, County Durham

A market town with no town council

Crook is the biggest town at the foot of Weardale, with a little over 12,000 people and a Market Place built round the Devil's Stone, the glacial boulder locals also call the Blue Stone. Unlike most towns its size, it has no town council. It sits in an unparished area, so there is no local clerk buying in grounds work for the town as a whole.

That changes who the buyers are. In Crook the grounds are mostly looked after site by site: a school field, the green space round a housing block, the frontage of a unit on the edge of town, a large garden up the hill. Each of those needs its own schedule, and that is how Reggie prices it.

Our base is Unit 4 Plawsworth Road in Sacriston, about 9 miles north east of Crook. The A689 runs from Durham through Crook and on up the dale, so it is one of the easier towns on our list to reach.

Who we work for in Crook

The people who run grounds in a town like Crook

Without a town council, the work comes from individual sites. These are the ones we are set up for.

school Schools Crook has a nursery school and three primary schools. Playing fields and boundaries have to be cut while children are using them, so visits are planned around the school day and the term.
apartment Housing and managed blocks Communal lawns, shrub beds and boundary hedges round blocks and estates, kept to the frequency the service charge pays for and written down before the first visit.
business Commercial units and shops Crook is a service centre for the villages round it. Business frontages, car park edges and verges get a regular cut so the site looks looked after every day it is open.
home Homeowners Garden tidy ups, lawns, hedges and landscaping for houses in and around Crook. Commercial work is most of the business, but domestic jobs are welcome.

FAQs

Questions from Crook

Anything else, ask when you ring.

How far are you from Crook?expand_more
About 9 miles in a straight line. We are based at Unit 4 Plawsworth Road in Sacriston, north east of the town.
Crook has no town council. Who do we talk to about public land?expand_more
Public parks and verges in Crook sit with Durham County Council, because the town is unparished. We work directly for the people who own or manage a site: schools, landlords, managing agents, businesses and homeowners.
How often would you visit?expand_more
It changes through the year rather than staying fixed. Fortnightly from the first cut in spring, moving to every seven to ten days through peak growth in June and July, then easing off into autumn. The schedule is agreed and written down before the first visit.
When can hedges be cut?expand_more
Autumn and winter, once the bird nesting season has finished. Active nests are protected by law and the nesting season runs from roughly March to August, so hedge work is planned around it rather than squeezed in. If something has to be cut inside that window for a genuine safety reason, the hedge is checked for nests first.
What documents can you provide before we commit?expand_more
Insurance details, risk assessments, method statements and references, all on request. Company details are public: Reggie T Landscapes Limited, registered in England and Wales, number 15496162, registered office Unit 4 Plawsworth Road, Sacriston, Durham DH7 6JX.
